Acquisition of Dogs

Photo: Police College

Most of the dogs are bought from private individuals or breeders. The dogs are usually acquired as puppies or at the age of about 1 - 2 years. Dogs are bought both from Finland and abroad. The Police Dog Training Centre acquires all the dogs that are trained as police dogs.

Every year, about 50 - 70 dogs are acquired, half of them as puppies. The Police Dog Training Centre is constantly buying dogs of breeds that are used as service dogs. Dogs that are to be trained as police dogs must be healthy and receptive to training. The dogs may have a background in service dog activities or as family pets.

Adult dogs offered as police dogs are subjected to an entrance examination, and if they pass, they remain with their new handler for a trial period of about one month. The dog starts in training if it is healthy and has the makings of a police dog.

Do you have a dog that could be suitable for being a police dog? Dog acquisitions are handled by Antti Tikkanen and Hans Müller, tel. +358 71 878 3530.
