The task of the Police Dog Training Centre is to train the dog handlers, acquire all the police dogs needed and develop police dog operations. The Police Dog Training Centre is a profit unit under the  Police College of Finland.

There are about 240 police dog handlers in Finland. Police has about 300 dogs. The German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd dogs (Malinois) are the most widely used breeds of police dog. Certain hunting dogs have also been given special training.
